      Hi all

I'm helping a friend set up an internet cafe in a few months.

      we have 2 X 10down 1.3up lines

around 30 users, for internet and gaming.

ive used smoothwall etc in the past  but never pfsense.

what hardware would you reccomend for this set up?

in the past ive had smoothwall with add ons such as dansguardian, clamAV, VPN, lots of forum users said low hardware was more than enough but when it came to the crunch it was quite slow.

Also does any one know of any content filtering for pfsense? whats the impact on performance like? smoothwall actually gave slow browsing when content filtering was on.

      thanks

        Hi!
Currently I use an old Dell Optiplex GX150 (PIII 512Mb SDRAM 20GB HDD 'cause I have
6 of this old computers…) with integrated 3Com Ethernet and optional Mikrotik Routerboard 44
        (4 ethernet 10/100Mb PCI).

        20 users, 2WAN's, 2DMZ, 1LAN no problem.
CPU usage 1-3%, Memory Usage 18%, Disk Usage 1%

        Hope this helps...

        Regards
        Andrea Menchetti.

If you want the cafe for gaming i suppose you mean also FPS which are better played with low pings. You might consider to use policy based routing and use one of your lines for gaming only. and the other for the rest.
If ping is not a concern for you just loadbalance.
But you might want to use advanced outbound NAT and use static ports since lot's of games dont like portscrambling.

If you want content filtering you might want to take a look at the packages that are availlable.
But i think you will need lot's of RAM :) i think with your 2x10 Mbit lines CPU speed wont be a matter.

We do what we must, because we can.
