When will we see pfsense on Freebsd 9 ?
-
Hi ,
i saw a prediction somewhere on the wiki or the forum about pfsense upgrades .
I am asking for freebsd 9 especially because of wireless drivers (just the support to more chipsets ) and i believe 802.11n is suported(correct me if i am wrong).
There is also Freebds 8.4 coming out. (legacy production).
Any chance in a near future to see a better support for the wireless network (there is still very much to do in the wireless interface config) -
I looked around and saw a post saying 2.1 is based on BSD 8.3 and some mention of v9 issues with the possibility of seeing it in 2.2.

When it earns legacy status. ;) ::)

Never :-)
Current plan is to target FreeBSD 10.x for pfSense 2.2.

I should add that driver-wise 8.3 is more up-to-date than a 9.0 (not 9.1 though) so hardware-wise only 8.4 would improve things - but as of writing it's not out yet.
And within reason, there have been made backports of relevant drivers like igb, ixgbe, mfi etc. from 9/8-stableThe firewall-related patches are what needs to be ported to a newer version and this requires quite some work.
So far 8.3/2.1 have been a very stable combo, it justs needs some bugs ironed out. :-) -

Thats good news :)
I use pfsense as a main router/access point in a small wireless community.(Alix2d2, 2 radios)
I did replace a Mikrotik with pfsense just because it makes more sense the way you configure it, but i really miss the extra wireless features(beacon, basic rates, rts frag ,basic rates, etc) i had to do some hand tuning to get some feature working.
I believe the wireless part of Pfsense is underpowered there is so much more it can give ,when we get 802.11n , Mesh, WDS, etc in the WebIf i believe there will be a boost on the number of Pfsense Boxes running just because of the new Wifi features. ;DI hope it doesn 't take long to have 2.2 release out.
Edit: just found this great news about freebsd 10

Mikrotik is strong in wireless, because most of their product line is geared towards affordable wireless solutions, WISPs etc and they have been doing it for the past 10+ years.

It'd be great, but based on the time it has taken to get to 2.1-BETA I wouldn't hold my breath …

2.1 development has been significantly longer than some because of the introduction of IPv6. A massive task! Although 1.2.3 - 2.0 was not quick. ;)
