    The internet was running with max speed through pfsense. Then I installed squid3 package, enabled transparent proxy and configured caching. It brought down the internet speed to half or may be even less. I unchecked "Transparent HTTP Proxy", it is back to max speed but with some latency. Then I searched through the pfsense forum where one solution to the issue seemed to be to add the following in  loader.conf file in the boot folder:

    kern.ipc.nmbclusters=32768
    kern.maxfiles=65536
    kern.maxfilesperproc=32768
    net.inet.ip.portrange.last=65535

    But it does not seem to work in my case. Is there anything else I can do? I am running pfsense in vmware workstation with win 7 host.

    Thanks.

      The problem got resolved by uninstalling version 3 of squid and installing squid 2.
