I'm aware that a full-blown mail server on pfSense is an Extremely Bad Idea, but how about a null client? I'm interested in having a way to have pfSense send me messages to my regular email client when errors happen on pfSense, so that I know I need to check things out and fix them.

Essentially, use a monitoring service to poll /var/log files and mail me when errors occur.

Any advice (good or bad idea) or alternatives?

Well, there is an option under the web interface (System: Advanced: Notifications) to send emails already. Can you re-use this functionality to send the emails?
