Pfsense crashes on Soekris Net 6501 : need ideas or suggestions
-
Hello all. I'm trying to find an idea on how to help a friend with a non-profit. He had an ailing/failing PC hardware pfsense running. He purchased a Soekris Net6501 with an mSATA SSD drive running the absolute latest pfsense.
Problem is, it randomly locks up. So far, I've found no real messages in the system log. It's done this two nights in a row and then a couple of random times during the day. When it does, he cannot connect to his VPN from home. When he comes in to check on it, he cannot even PING the LAN address. So, it appears to be a hard crash or lockup.
We don't know if it's a hardware incompatibility issue between the older version of FreeBSD on pfsense and the newer Soekris or if there's some long-forgotten config item which is blowing things up. If I could find a helpful log entry, it would be good, but so far I've found none. We've removed Squid and Lightsquid. We've tried to look for anything unused and turn it off. Hasn't made a difference. Yesterday, we upgraded the Net6501 to its latest BIOS firmware to try that. Locked up again last night.
Any ideas or suggestions?
He's ready to ditch the brand new Soekris because it doesn't seem to be reliable.

Hi,
I guess thats also our problem with last firmware's since 4th July (was defines as beginning 2nd July) ; even last update from 8th July wasn't working - it crashed today 6 times.
I asked yesterday if someone has for me a download link from 1st July because I found on Friday only newer updates packages but nobody answered.Luckily I had from June 14th also a Full-Update so I must not fallback to April 22th one…
If you have a firmware before 2nd July then use this one. If not I can upload/offer you my "backup"Bests

Problems with the FTP patches had caused crashes and hangs for some. Builds from around July 1 to before July 9th had those crash/hang issues.
You can disable the FTP proxy (set debug.pfftpproxy=1 in System > Advanced, Tunables tab) or upgrade to a current snapshot.

yes… I have done it
Yesterday evening updated to
2.1-RC0 (amd64)
built on Mon Jul 8 21:53:11 EDT 2013
FreeBSD 8.3-RELEASE-p8
because last possible version to download was from July, 2nd. But still same problem…Has someone a link to a stable version from July, 1st please (older version is from April, 22th so rolling back is not so nice)?
Thanks.this was latest image from 8th and people posted that it was fixed with this version (or the one before this) so I downloaded/installed this version.
Now I've downgraded to 14th June image… 6 servers after CC work time... No interest to play with other updates tonight ;)

C'mon guys…when someone installs a beta version of some software (even when it#s called "release candidate") expects an "interesting experience", not a stable production system.
So...why not try pfSense 2.0.3?

In our case: while the mainboard is too new for it ? ;)
in other cases: because you need IPv6 support?(today there weren't crashes but first time I heard that the last 4 days employes had and still have problems with accessing distinct FTP servers…
Interesting that it was working with snapshot April 22th but not with it from June 16th)... -
Give it another try with a current snapshot, it should be fairly stable now.
