Help getting started with Avahi

I am trying to learn how to setup and use zero configuration systems and have set out to install the Avahi package on my pfsense box, but have been unable to get it working. I have been unable to find any documentation or video guides on what exactly I need to do to get this up and running properly.
Does anyone have a newbie friendly, step by step guide on what I need to do to get this working and to test it properly?

It depends on what you're trying to do and what you're attempting to use it for.
Avahi is typically used to allow you do to cross-subnet mDNS, so that services like Bonjour and various other Apple things will work between subnets when they otherwise have to be local to each other.

The end goal of this is to be able to serve up a captive portal page to devices that are not properly configured / ended up on the wrong subnet. I will admit I only recently learned about zeroconf, and am not sure if this is possible, but I am seeking to enhance my knowledge on the subject regardless of if it is possible.

I'm not sure if Avahi will help you there. I doubt it, but feel free to experiment.

I remember that I installed it once and that it worked out of the box. There is not much to configure. I don't have it installed anymore.
