Which package/packages best to monitor traffic and LOG IT

We had an incident a few months back our ISP charged us for using abnormally large amounts of traffic in a 2 day period. It was either an error on their end or something hacked our connection and used it for their own good because nobody was at the offices at the hours that the bandwidth was used etc.

Besides that, I want to be able to accurately monitor what traffic is going in/out so if our ISP charges us again I can show them proof in our logs that such activity wasn't going on…or if it was a hack attempt..show them the logs to help fix the situation.

What do you guys suggest?

May be via .htaccess  .htpasswd ?
