PfSense failover with DHCP on WAN side .. feature in the future … ?
-
i have been perusing the forums on this topic (failover with dhcp on wan side interface) and read the following post
http://forum.pfsense.org/index.php/topic,51483.msg275243.html#msg275243
my question is…(i guess this could go into the bounty subforum, but i am asking here) .. could this be a function/feature in future versions? reason i ask is that many people are on dhcp (cable, dsl, sat, dial-up, 1200 baud dial-up) connections and i would assume they would like to have this function/feature with-in carp & pfsense….instead of asking their provider for another IP (which most wont give you, and make you go the business connection route) ….
sooooo..does anyone think this could be a viable function/feature in future releases**?**

On 2.2 we will have a new carp system that can operate with a single IP. I'm not sure if it will be feasible to obtain that IP via DHCP, but it might be possible there. Even if it is possible, the secondary unit would have no external connectivity so it could not fetch packages, updates or anything unless it was forced to be the master at the time.

awesomeness, but the secondary unit will be able to process traffic right?

In that situation the secondary would only process traffic if it is the carp master, not when it is the carp backup. If the primary fails, it would still pass traffic as expected, but when the primary is up it would have no external connectivity.
