Sonicwall Pro2040 Install
-
Has anyone managed to make progress in getting pfSense to install on a sonicwall pro2040 platform? I still have this thing sitting around and would love to put pfsense or monowall on it still.

Don't waste your time. Even if you manage to boot pfsense there is still a lot of work to do.

If you get pfSense to boot you're probably good to go, however I don't think you will be able to. It appears the Sonicwall bios/bootloader performs some checksum on the boot media before it will allow it to boot. Don't let that stop you having a go though if you're got one. :)

Hrm… So the limitation is inside the BIOS? Or is the bootloader contained on a firmware chip connected to the board?
I would expect the bootloader to be on the CF card.
Have you found a replacement BIOS file for the hardware?
Would it be possible to dump the bios from the device and modify it to not look for a checksum?

Maybe but you'd have to access it directly since you can't boot anything from which to read it. Sonicwall seem to have gone to some length to prevent it being modified. It would be interesting to get another opinion on it though. See what you can find.
