      Running:
      2.1-RELEASE (amd64)
built on Wed Sep 11 18:17:34 EDT 2013
      FreeBSD 8.3-RELEASE-p11

      Firmware Auto Update URL =
      http://updates.pfsense.org/_updaters/amd64

When click on Auto Update tab:
      Downloading new version information…done
      Unable to check for updates.
Could not contact custom update server.

However, if I use IE on my PC to check the URL - it seems to be okay?

I can also do traceroutes from PFSense, and DNS Seems to be okay...

Any idea on what may be preventing contact to the update server?

Did you ever find a solution to this? I have the same issue with the same symptoms.

Had the same issue…. The version dns error was resolved by flipping the following option:

          On the general settings page...

Check the box that says to not use the dns forwarder for pfsense.
