I currently have an old WRT54G running DD-WRT that I'd like to replace with a device running pfsense.  I'd like to run snort, squid, etc… to enable IDS and content filtering and connect it between my cable model (currently have 30-50 Mbps down) and my 10 port unmanaged GB switch.  One constraint is that I'd like to keep it on a small enough device to keep behind my wiring panel.  I'm looking for some recommendations for a small computing device that will have enough processor, memory and storage to handle all the above mentioned services on my home network.  I was looking at the Intel NUC, but they don't have 2 ethernet ports and I'd prob be looking at at least $350 to get it built out.  Any thoughts, recommendations would be great.

      Thanks!

I was just spec'ing this build out tonight… If you've got Amazon prime, you could do it for less than $200

Thanks for the recommendation.  The think I was thinking is perhaps using a lower profile case like this one:

that silverstone case is nice but then you gotta get everything thin itx motherboard etc…

really does limit some of the options,  ie with a full size itx case you can add an itx mobo and add say ethernet adaptors or use the gigabyte dual nic itx intel motherboards...

              still a nice case !

Yea… really nice looking case. Poked around a bit though and it seems like you're very limited for thin mini-itx boards with dual NIC's. Price would definitely go up as well...

I suppose I really do want the dual nic motherboard.  I'm going to open up my wiring panel and make sure I have enough room for that case.  If so I will probably upgrade the build list to 4gb of RAM and a 64Gb SSD and get mine ordered.

Let me know if you do the build and  how it works out. I was looking at it for a friend and haven't ordered yet. The motherboard was recommended on the forums here… Seems like a pretty good deal to me - your getting a processor that has the wattage draw and price of an atom but the performance of a core-2 duo.

Well this is what I am currently running.

And after seeing my electric bill this is what I ordered instead. It has everything I need and then some, hell it has 5 intel Gig ports can't go wrong there.
