    The auto update service says

Could not contact pfSense update server http://updates.pfsense.org/_updaters/amd64

Yet I can use the SSH console and execute

    [2.1-RELEASE][admin@firewall.somewhere.net]/root(14): telnet updates.pfsense.org 80

    and then GET /_updaters/amd64/
and I see a list of gz images. Is there anything wrong with my setup?

Do you have multiwan? Ipv6 enabled?
This can cause your symptoms: https://doc.pfsense.org/index.php/Controlling_IPv6_or_IPv4_Preference

Also have a look through the suggestions in this thread: http://forum.pfsense.org/index.php/topic,68164.0.html
