      Hi!
What can I do if I losed the administration password without reinstalling pfSense?

      Thank you very much!
      Bye.

reset it from the local console (over the serial port)

We do what we must, because we can.

Good question.  One could recover through console - ONLY if console was enabled by the user prior as it's not enabled by default.  In addition - according to the pfsense's description of this feature - if local console is enabled one will loose access to keyboard and CRT - hardly a good solution for non embeded installations.

As it stands pfsense does not have a good way to recover from forgotten or changed-by-another-user password.

If it's a full install in the default configuration, the console menu will let you reset the password. If you enable the serial console, VGA is disabled, so you have to connect to the serial console and do the same. If it's embedded, you use the serial console as well.

The only situation where you can't recover from a lost password is if you enable password protection on the console on the Advanced page, which is not enabled by default.

That just isn't true, see above.

              Hi cmb.

              I stand corrected.  To summarize:

By default, on full installs the password cannot be recovered through the serial port.  The option to reset the password is available through local (vga+keyboard) console however.

On embeded installs console option to reset the password can be accessed via serial port.

              thanks.
