SMTP notification fails with Error: 501 5.5.2 Cannot Decode response

I have setup my pfsense, running 2.1-release, to send SMTP notifications:

• smtp.gmail.com

• 465 enable SSL/TLS ticked

• with an email+password that I have checked carefully

When I click Test SMTP i see in the system log:
php: /system_advanced_notifications.php: Could not send the message to my.name@gmail.com – Error: 501 5.5.2 Cannot Decode response v7sm48467eel.2 - gsmtp

and the SSL7TLS becomes unchecked.

Any help would be gratefully received  :)
