Installed PFSense version 2.1 (I386 on FreeBSD 8.3 - P11) Using static WAN IP I cannot set WAN gateway with web gui - just get spinning icon next to it.  Was able to set gateway only under system menu using setup wizard.  However after setting this the gateway shows pending under status menu.  Internet access for the client works however.  What am i missing?

Your gateway doesn't respond to pings perhaps?

Gateway responds to ping fine from pfsense connected client and from the diagnostic tab in PFSense.

Hmm, anything unusual about your gatway or WAN connection?
You could try a 2.1.1 snapshot since that had a number of fixes for apinger (the gateway monitoring service).

On the gateway status page I clicked on "restart the apinger service" icon, now the gateway reports "online" in green.  Not sure why I had to do that but it is working correctly now.

Having this same (old) problem with 2.6.0.
Restarting the service solved it instantly. 👍

@bgroper Nothing like ressurecting an 8 year old thread. :D But yes, I just had the same issue, restarting the service fixed it for me too!

IMHO, resurrecting old threads that solve current problems should be encouraged. 😉

The problem with doing that is that whatever was causing that 8 years ago is almost certainly not which might be causing it now. But by tacking it onto here it implies the cause is the same leading everyone down the wrong path. Potentially.

It would be much better to use a current thread or start a new one.

I respect your point of view, and acknowledge that I'm completely ignoring the cause/s of old or current issues.
I'm also enthusiastic about recycling (good for the environment), especially when the recycling gives a simple solution to a current problem.
Very sorry if I've upset the good order and structure of this forum.
Will try not to do that again.

Same here. I've had the problem a few times and dpinger restart also solved it instantly (v22.01). Probably a lingering bug not bad enough to make it to the top of action list.

Agreed, I also run across the problem occasionally, and restarting the dpinger service solves it. :)

Its strange, that everything comes up and operates properly VPN connections, etc. But looking at the Dashboard, gateways shows pending.. /shrug

Anyone able to test 23.01beta to see if it still happens there? A lot of changes have gone in there that might prevent this.

On my end nothing solves this issue short of a system reboot.

Well I have not tested on 23.01 but I used to get similar issues for many of my installations with 2.6.

Yes, Ofcourse, Rebooting firewall or restarting service makes the gateway come online.

Recently I found a work around, if it gives some kind of pointer. I have set the WAN as static IP instead of dhcp. This solves the pending issue. I guess it is more of an issue in uplink modem, unable to assign a dhcp address to WAN port of firewall.

So i guess there is no issue with pfsense.
