On pfSense 2.1 the NTP service stops working randomly. I just have no idea why. Can anyone give me tips on how to investigate the problem and hopefully solve it.

My pfSense 2.1 is running on ESXi.

        See logs? Try 2.1.1 snapshots?

          Client or server?
Running an ntp server virtualised is not a good idea as the virtual clock causes problems. I imagine that's what is happening to you, the ntpd service freaks out because it's reference clock is running at what appears to be variable speed.

I was going to add a link to this article in the section that Steve references:

            https://www.vmware.com/files/pdf/Timekeeping-In-VirtualMachines.pdf

Just haven't had time  ::) to do that.

There also seems to be a problem with NTP falling over when it's restarted after a WAN down/up event.  Look at the logs to see if you have any WAN problems.

What is your ntpd service log saying? /var/log/ntpd.log

Is it signal 15 then starting again?

It stops working until you kick it off again?

              Just client or server?
