      I have installed Snort in Windows 2008 with the line in snort.conf:

      And gave me the error ***PortVar Lookup failed on '$HTTP_PORT when I do the command:

      And not run that rules if I delete the rules the system runs perfect.
      what can be the cause of the error or what I need to add or remove to my configuration to be able to run that rules?
      Of course I'm not using the default port of SQL Server we changed.

        And not run that rules if I delete the rules the system runs perfect.
        what can be the cause of the error or what I need to add or remove to my configuration to be able to run that rules?
        Of course I'm not using the default port of SQL Server we changed.

        Well, this is a discussion forum for FreeBSD-based pfSense (no Windows around here.. ;)), but I think I see your problem.

        You have $HTTP_PORTS defined in your snort.conf file (which is correct), but in the rule you posted you have $HTTP_PORT.  They are NOT the same variable to Snort.  You are missing the "S" in $HTTP_PORTS in your first three local rules.

          Just to finalize imchanged the port of SQL no matter that ok and with this command:

          snort -d -A console -i2 -c c:\Snort\etc\snort.conf -l c:\Snort\log -K ascii
          

          Is supposed the system running and protecting droping sal injection attacks ok? or I need to add something more to the command line.

            This is OK, but just be aware that logging in ASCII is not terribly efficient for Snort.  At low traffic levels on a powerful box it is OK, but on very busy networks Snort might drop packets (that is, miss inspecting them) while it is trying to write a large ASCII log packet.  Most folks let Snort log in the binary unified2 mode and then use a tool like Barnyard2 to read that binary log and then write to ASCII or a MySQL database.

And the only "alerts" what do?Just found the attack then make a reset or something? Because we don't only need to detect and see we need a ban for the action. Look this topic:

                Only a few platforms support true inline mode with "drop" rules, and Windows is not one of those platforms.  So Snort on Windows can alert you of a problem, but it can't block the traffic.  Snort on pfSense can alert on and block offending traffic.  Same thing for Snort on most Linux platforms.  So if you want Snort to actually block offending traffic and not just alert on it, then you need to switch platforms…and since this is a pfSense forum, I highly recommend pfSense with the Snort package ;)

                    You can only protect devices on networks that are "behind" the Snort installation.  What I mean by "behind" is that traffic routed from the Internet (or any other network you consider potentially hostile) to the server you want to protect must come and go through the Snort machine. That's the only way Snort could block offending traffic.

                    I may not be understanding your question completely.  I don't mean to insult, but from your posts I am guessing English is not your primary language.  It is a bit difficult for me to completely understand what you are asking me with the translation.  If you have servers located in two geographically diverse locations, the only way you could have Snort on one of them protect a Windows install on the other one is if they were both part of an interconnected VPN and the Snort machine is the gateway into and out of the VPN.  Anything else and the answer is "no", you generally can't do what you are asking with geographically diverse networks.
