Gbit throughput with pfSense?

  • I am interested in putting a firewall on a VM, to setup a virtual test lab in our VMWare environment. All of the physical NICs are Gbit. Will pfSense give me Gbit speeds for traffic passing through it? This is similar to a DMZ, but completely internal to the network where the entire network is Gbit. Or do I risk spiking the CPU usage on my VMWare servers?

  • Something has to do the work, so of course your CPU usage is going to increase.  Whether or not you can push Gig-E speeds depends on the hardware in question.  There are a couple people here doing 4-5Gbit/s through VMs.

  • Yes, you can push a full gig through pfsense, i do it all the time. I believe it is recommended that you have at least a 3Ghz CPU.

Recommended but not required.  I think those numbers were based on Netburst cores.
