VMWare Workstation Version9.0.3 build-1410761
-
I am running VMware Workstation 9.0.3 build-1410761 on a windows 7 Professional Host with a Dell Precision workstation.
If I wish to use pfSense as a border firewall, can I install the software on the windows host without wiping out the Windows 7 host machine.
The installation documentation would suggest that the product has to be installed on a new disk ? -
PfSense is a complete OS so doesn't usually share hardware. Also there is no dual boot option in the installer, it will erase the whole drive.
However you can install it as a VM in vmware and route traffic through it.

Thanks Steve, that is exactly the information that I needed. I am surprised that the simple statement that pFSense is an operating system on its own is not mentioned prominently in the product information.

Hmm, that's a good point. I thought it was pretty clearly described but I may have been thinking of the old site (though I can't find in the internet archive either!). There are occasionsally get similar questions on the forum so perhaps it could be clearer. Do you have any suggestions? What would you expect to read as a new user?
Hopefully one of the project devs can improve the wording.Steve

I can't get to it right away, but I'll move things around and make it more visable and hopefully easier to understand.
You are probably thinking about what is now the top of this page: https://www.pfsense.org/about-pfsense/index.html
It is also mentioned a little here: https://www.pfsense.org/getting-started/index.html#overview
Thanks, (new) user feedback is always appreciated.
