When you were finishing your install of 1.2RC3, towards the end, did you choose to use the SMP kernel or did you select the single-cpu option?  I have a feeling you didn't choose the SMP option.

The other item is:  Did you perform an upgrade on this box or a full, clean install?

          From a shell do this:

          rm /boot/kernel/pfsense_kernel.txt

Now reinstall 1.2-RC3 and it should prompt for the kernel type.

            It's an upgrade from RC2 to RC3

For clarification, there was a period of time where the update just defaulted to the non SMP kernel on upgrade.  It now prompts for the kernel type on upgrade.
