Copied the nanoBSD version over to a KingSpec 8 Gb SSD USB stick.  It seems almost to boot.

I am wondering if I can do this by just making the adjustments on the USB stick plugged into a running PFSense PC.

Well maybe not as I just got a fatal error on the console; "CAM status 0X4"

I then put the USB stick in an Ubuntu 14.X box and couldn't load the BSD filesystem.

Try to interrupt the bootloader (by pressing space) and set the kern.cam.boot_delay:
        https://doc.pfsense.org/index.php/Boot_Troubleshooting#Booting_from_USB

If that doesn't work you may have to edit the location of the root, which isn't stored in the fstab in Nano. If it's really looking in the wrong place then type ? at the mountroot> prompt to see where it should be pointing and enter the appropriate command to point it there.
