Replacement of IPCop with url filter
-
Hi,
I want to replace my old IPCop by a pfsense and I need on it something similar to advanced Proxy and url filter.
can I do this with pfsense ?
Thanks in advance

I used IPCop for a couple of years and then switched to pfSense about 2 years ago. I don't know of anything that you can do in IPCop that you can't do in pfSense - and then some! The only thing that might be difficult is if you need to replicate IP tables rules that function at layer 2 (MAC based rules). If so, you'll need to do some jerking around in pfSense to enable the ipfw firewall and add your own custom rules.
I think the closest approximation of advanced proxy and URL filter would be Squid + Squidguard (packages that can be installed). The other obvious solution is Dansguardian (also a package). Snort could probably be used as well, but is complete overkill.

Hi,
thanks for the reply. the advantage of the url filter was to make it easy to set limits. I use it in a school and I just have to say no porn no violence, etc put some sites in white list (my webmail is considered as porn…)
No need to be a geek for that, just need to know how to read.I found on the internet an howto about Squid + Squidguard, I will give it a test
thanks
