Another Noob question - concerning updates to Snort

Presently I think the snort version on install from package install is 2.7.0.1_3.
Snort is now at ver 2.8 I believe. I thought that if I uninstall the package and then re-install it would somehow pick the newer version. I was incorrect in my assumption.
How would one go about installing / upgrading to the latest version of Snort?
