      I stumbled across a company named Millenicom out of Portland, OR.  They resell sprint service nationally, just without the contract.  Its month to month.  Have rave reviews over at BBR, but anyway, I digress.  Since I am now in a REV A service area, I thought about giving it a try.  The device they use is the Franklin CDU-680.  There is limited support in the BSDs for GPRS modem support.  If anyone else wants to tinker, I hope the info is helpful.  Just wanted to get the info out there.
