Odd issue

Had an issue with some devices not getting out onto the net. Rebooting the firewall fixed it. Could it be a software issue and a fresh install could fix? Where could I look to see what the issue was? This time it was a nest thermostat that would not connect to its home, but the nest protects would connect to the same IP just fine.
