Thoughts on the new "Gold" menu in 2.1.5
-
Hi;
While I'll get flogged for this about the gold bar . I don't care it's there it just make me not able to logout use the first menu at all that I care about.
my help and the first menu overlap each other. both in firefox and in chrome. while i'm sure it times out. would like that fixed oh and thanks for fixing my antivirus status issue i've been having. -
@gonzopancho:
Yes, "Gold" is probably the wrong name. I'd hate to do "pfCloud" though. Suggestions on names are encouraged.
Why not simply naming it for what it stands:
pfServices or ESFServices -

Premium Platinum Extreme Edition.
Since I can't come up with anything, I'll vote for "pfCenter" for fanciness, and "Subscription" for simplicity.
pfCenter is already the name of a different product (ours, but still.)

I've been mulling over changing the name (by appending a version string) of the CSS file on every release.
(no flogging from me!)

Do you work for Microsoft? No? Maybe EDS? :-)

As soon as they put a picture of cmb in a string on the frontpage, I'm considering posting a comment about it on the forum :).
Assuming this exists, you'll have to steal this out of iCloud, or bribe Mrs. Buechler.
Have you met him? I stand 6'3", and he towers over me.

@gonzopancho:
Knowing full well I'm probably in the minority, I'm going to speak up.
Aside from some theme/font formatting issues, the addition of the "Gold" menu doesn't bother me. It's not telling me to "Buy Gold," rather it's just "Gold" as a menu for where I might find paid features. pfSense has had a commercial support offering with some extra features for as long as I can remember, and this feels no worse.Quite the opposite. I love the $99/yr subscription, it brings project support and previously commercial-only features (AutoConfigBackup) within my budgetary reach. So in at least one instance, the "Gold" menu will pay off for pfSense, and I'm happy to do it.
I'm actually considering bundling ACB into pfSense. You would still need a (free or higher) portal account to use it (because that's how it works), but it would be free to use.
Thanks for your comment.
And yes, the formatting issues are … a bit tragic. We'll work out the issues, and the menu will get populated with services that people who run pfSense can take or not take.
:o is that means i can use it with free account? ;D just in case for saving/restoring backups, tired to download configs to my drives…i have some experience today dealing with squid+havp+sarg+clam and other stuff like that...but something get messy after i doing some movements with guidelines that guys posted here on pfsense forums ::) and then I've broke something... ah is so great that y guys doing simple rollback in main pfsense console with backups under (15) :P this menu is just save my day cause I'm already get WebGUI lockout and ssh when play with some sort of things like havp+squid.....to hell with me! i want stable versions of squid3+havp and appropriate guide with pictures to how to setup appropriate http/https ssl filtering....
the only one thing in pfsense bother me sometimes is that pbi is simple not an option for such great distribution, i mean, what if i want to updrade something manually, once i want to install mc on my pfsense installation and got lib hell after managing to install mc from freebsd ports >:( it's kinda weird when you stick around to an old versions of software, like i installed tooday havp and find out that "freshclam" command show up to me that i have old clamd version with considering to upgrade :-X pbi is need to complex work and maintain some soft of base packages. So, I've got one question, did you guys plan or thinking about to do something about it in future releases? Even though i know that pfsense is for routers not for kitchens ;D...but sometimes ppl just want to press button and refresh some sort of software and with simple guide get it to work (I've use once a pone time ClearOS...it's nothing to be compared to their free functionality vs pfsense distribution).
Also packages system is varies from platform to platform versions of pfsense 1, 2, 2.1 or some minor versions and sometimes i got really scare about do i need to install packages from another pfsense platform versions, cause some bug in uninstallation process sometimes just leaves already uninstalled things under my services (like "system patches" package or "RIP" daemon)...
Long live pfsense! To be honest i like how the security issues of freebsd base system is reflected and cleared in late patches, I've read some patch notes under the hood and for this major distribution it is a great work for us people, i hope you know that we appreciate your concerns to do that in the future releases.
I've recently visit pfsense redmine just for fun...hopefully in this cold winter we could have pfsense 2.2 on our machines.
Sorry about my English i am living in cold Russia :'(
Привет!
PBIs are dead after 2.2, we're going (back) to pkg(-ng). It was a nice experiment, but even PC-BSD uses pkg-ng now.

@ Supermule: What? Are you charging customers for pfSense and telling those clients that you paid for it? Ah, that makes sense, it's giving you away… That's why your upset about the <gold>menu... LOL... Hmm...
Why not make a menu that only appears when you type a subscriber ID in some sort of menu under services? or general settings?
Then you wouldnt have all this…
Or just cal. it "Subscription"
I wouldn't be upset in the least if this happened as long as the non-subscribers home enthusiasts received the same software. Remove the <gold>for "corporate support subscribers" so Supermules customers are happy. You wanted opinions, I just gave it..</gold></gold>
-
Maybe not, but it wouldn't raise Gold revenue as effectively, either.
When Supermule and others starts sending in quality patches for the system, we can talk.
Patches are gleefully accepted (and then reviewed), of course, but a decade of history shows that the rate of these is not enough
to keep the project in shape.Until then, I'm going to depend on the people who are employed to get things done and keep a schedule, and accept what comes from
the community when it does.So Goat.se…

Aaaah NO I am not…
Just so that its perfectly clear!

Just to be perfectly clear, you're a home user, right?
-
Nope :)

If that's your home internet bandwidth then I'm even more jealous than before. ;) I guess there are more and more places getting Gigabit order home connections. I'm just not in one of them. There does of course come a point when more speed isn't actually that helpful:

We can get 10GbE here no problem. Price is about 500 USD pr. mth.
So its just to upgrade if needed but running Linksys WRT1900AC at home and it can easily push those speeds.
-
One of the things ESF should consider was a small payment for WRT hardware image that can replace the OEM image on the drive.
https://github.com/wrt1900ac/opensource
-
Not quite sure what you're suggesting there. :-\ ESF supply modems?
Edit: An option to supply hardware with OpenWRT rather than pfSense?Anyway I just got upgraded to a whole 77Mbps and was pretty happy with that. ::)
Steve
-
:D No Pfsense on the Linksys WRT1900AC since its apparently OS.
One of the fastest SOHO routers outthere and pfsense combined would be a winner!
-
Well personally I'd love to see that and I think many others would too but I can see a number of fairly large obstacles in the way. Anyway we're now way off topic. Have you checked out http://zrouter.org/ (Edit: Now looks like a dead project :()

Steve
zrouter.org is quite dead, but they did some solid work.
Biggest obstacle for pfSense on that hardware is 802.11ac support. It's not ready in FreeBSD (not even in -HEAD. hell, the 802.11n support is barely passable.)
The second largest obstacle is that if we charged for such a thing, the "community" would just copy it (via torrent, etc.)
I'm sure people like Supermule would help, too.
"This is why we can't have nice things."
I've already committed to pfSense on the Edge Router Lite after 2.2 ships.
-
Nope :)
Perhaps you'll explain just what your interest in pfSense is, then.
It would be nice to know.
