Can I pay someone for support?
-
I NEED to figure out how to properly delete LightSquid so I can reinstall (if I want) to get rid of the 404 error bug. It needs to be deleted via command line, but I don't know the exact package name so I can't get it deleted that way.
I also need someone to help me get some reporting up and running so that I can read the logs from Squid. I NEED to be able to see what sites my kids are going to, and I NEED to be able to see it soon.
I've trying asking questions in various places on the forum but never get any replies. I'm willing to pay someone, if someone out there is willing to help me.
PLEASE.

Is your current system setup very complicated? Because if its not, it would be easy to wipe the drive, re-install pfsense, squid and light squid and then you are done. Lightsquid enables you to see what sites people are visiting, so not sure what other "reporting" you will need.
-
I want to see what PAGES people are visiting, not just the top level domain.
I don't know that my system is overly complicated, but I've got about 60 DHCP reservations I don't really want to setup again, among other things (several VLANs, VPN, etc…). The biggest snag with that is that I'd lose all the information squid has already gathered, right? I want to know what sites were visited yesterday and today, as well as moving forward.
-
where are you getting a 404 error, and why do you think you need to uninstall lightsquid - and what happens when you try and remove it?
-
I get the 404 error when I try to view the report. When I try to remove it, the uninstall just hangs forever. I found an old they on here about a big in the uninstall packet which requires it to be removed via command line. It tells what to type in that thread, but the package name is different and I can't get it to work. That thread is the one that said to fix the 404 error you need to manually remove it via command line and reinstall.
I appreciate the feedback. I really need to get this working. The alternative is that I go buy a new router which I know will do this out of the box, I just don't want to have to do that. Everything else about this is great and I really don't want to spend hours and hours setting it all up again.
-
Link to the thread?
More details please. Presumably you are reinstalling lightsquid because it wasn't working correctly? What was/wasn't it doing? What do you want it to do?

There are two solutions that are fairly simple.
1. reinstall the lightsquid package then uninstall
2. burn and slash pfsense and reinstal from fresh
The other options are technical.

I am really curious what router you think does this out of the box ;) You clearly are not talking about any off the shelf soho type solution.
As mentioned Stephen a link to this thread that thinks fixes this problem would be helpful.

Steve, I just want it to show me the web traffic reports. It doesn't do that. When I try to click on the report, I get a 404 error.
I'll try and find a link to that thread again, but it was old. Like 2006 or 2007 old.
All I want to do is to be able to see what pages on what websites my kids are visiting. That's all. I used to be able to do this with my $149 ASUS and it worked really easy. I've got some funny business going on, and I need to see how bad/involved it is so I can figure out what to do.

I've tried reinstalling and uninstalling Lightsquid countless times, although I'll try doing it again. Maybe the 7th or 8th time is the charm?
I'm open to trying anything technical as well, so long as I have detailed instructions. I've never worked with a command line interface before, without having instructions that tell me EXACTLY what to type.

I'll try and find a link to that old thread, but it was really old. Previously I had an ASUS router that was about $149, and it did this and worked out great. It fell short in other areas, but seeing the pages people visited was incredibly easy.

asus routers do not have this feature.. Were you running 3rd party software on it?
soho routers are not proxies, so there would be no way to log where user X went or even IP Y went. Now you could install 3rd party on them openwrt, tomato, dd-wrt, etc. and install proxy software on them and then get history. But out of the box sorry they do not do that out of the box.
Now you might be able to view active connections from ip to ip, etc. But a router does not care about urls - it only routes IP based traffic.. It can not tell you that billy went to google.com at 8:07 am
Is this maybe the info you are talking about?

https://doc.pfsense.org/index.php/Lightsquid_ErrorsThat isn't the thread I was talking about. The thread I was linking to is below.
I will try what I see in that document though and report back. Thank you.

When I type:
pkg_delete lightsquid*
as instructed in that document I get the following output:
$ pkg_delete lightsquid*
pkg_delete: no such package 'lightsquid*' installedI don't know the exact package name/number….no matter what I try it doesn't find it.

Well, I somehow got the package to uninstall finally using the "remove package" from the GUI. Maybe a restart of the PFSense box helped this? Anyway, it's reinstalling LightSquid now and I'm hoping that it will work.
fingers crossed
-
WAHOO! I don't know what happened, but I got it to work.
Now, I just need to figure a few things with LightSquid out but that should be pretty straightforward.
-
OK, so LightSquid is working, but isn't showing the level of data I'm after.
I can see there were 39 connections to bing.com for example, but I want to see what terms were searched on Bing.com.
Is this possible? I want to see the exact pages and every URL hit…not just the top level domain.
I'm happy to pay for something, but I'd like more detail if possible.

"Well, I somehow got the package to uninstall finally using the "remove package" in gui".
You know, For some reason it never occurred to me to ask if you had pressed the remove package button or not.
No idea why…. haha
Normally if someone has a complaint like "The door is stuck"
Suggestions like "Have you tried turning the handle" just get me into trouble.Oh well - Another of the great mysteries of pfsense solved.
-
Not sure - I'm beginning to think what you really need to do is install keystroke loggers on the clients if you want all the searches and keystrokes.
-
I tried the remove package button tons of times, and it never worked. After a reboot it did. Oh well.
