I am trying to access my box from external address and I was trying to allow access to ssh on a non-standard port but it appears the only way to do this is to use NAT to forward all incoming traffic on the needed port to the LAN IP address of the box is there a way to make a firewall rulle to allow acces on the needed port or should I just use NAT to forward to the LAN port

Not sure I'm following you, but- if you are trying to ssh to your pfSense box from the Internet, all you need to do is to go to the firewall rules on the WAN and create a rule allowing the correct port to WAN ADDRESS.
