      Hello,

I'm currently thinking about the hardware for my new PfSense box.

Main purpose: Fun on building my own router
Side purpose: Replacement of my Cisco 871 Router (I'm still satisfied with it, but I want additional things like ad blocking on network level, snort, etc..)

Usage: About 10 Clients behind the router, snort, squid, adblocking, virus scanning, vpn (1-2 users).

Hardware I have looked up so far:
      Mainboard: MSI Z97I AC (https://geizhals.at/msi-z97i-ac-7851-001r-a1111451.html)
      CPU: Intel Celeron G1820T (https://geizhals.at/intel-celeron-g1820t-cm8064601482617-a995568.html)
      Ram: 1x Kingston ValueRAM DIMM 8GB, DDR3-1333, CL9, ECC (https://geizhals.at/kingston-valueram-dimm-8gb-kvr1333d3e9s-8g-a697922.html)
SSD: Intel SSD 530 Series 120GB (https://geizhals.at/intel-ssd-530-series-120gb-ssdsc2bw120a401-a1000984.html) [Maybe I'm going to use an old laptop hdd instead]
      Wlan antenna: 2x  (https://geizhals.at/delock-wlan-ac-a-b-g-n-antenne-88898-a1156934.html)

Estimated cost: 315 Euro (without case).

      I have the following questions:

      • Does anyone have a recommendation for a nice small mini-itx case where this pieces fit in?
      • I didn't find out if my mentioned hardware is FreeBsd 8.3 compatible?
      • Is this setup going to be "noiseless" or should I consider some other parts if I want a router that makes almost no noise.

Are there any things you come up which I may haven't thought about?

      Thanks for your input :)

I've just bought that M350 enclosure, you can get it cheaper in combo with pico psu and power brick.
It hasn't arrived yet, but from the looks I can say it's a nice little case.

          Cheers.

I don't think the wireless on that motherboard will work with pfsense: https://forum.pfsense.org/index.php?topic=71312.0

Is there a reason you're going with ECC RAM?  The board won't support it - it will probably work fine as non-ECC RAM but you may be wasting money.

8GB is way too much. 4GB will be more than enough for the next few years.

Hi, the days of paying over $200 for a basic setup full of useless and power hungry components are long gone, this can handle your situation at half your expected cost:
                  https://forum.pfsense.org/index.php?topic=75415.0

Fanless, noiseless, dual lan, wifi, ssd, ram, 17w power consumption, < $200.
Just search for c1037u or 1037u on Aliexpress.

that board does not support ecc ram, and i dont think the cpu

if you want cheap and ecc, you need to go atom (only specific ones) or an amd on asus setup

the athlon 5350 is quite popular  because its low power, has aes-ni, and does ecc

Wow, that's really a nice box.. I think I will get that one.

I will use and old hdd for that and additionally get:
Intel Wireless WiFi Link 4965AGN Mini PCIE Wireless WiFi WLAN Card 300Mbps
                        Kingston ValueRAM SO-DIMM 8GB, DDR3L-1600

Will be in total around 210 Euro without shipping. Looks great to me considering it's fanless, noiseless and not heavy in energy consumption.
