Is this build good enough?
-
What I am looking to do is have a always on vpn connection to my entire house, my internet connection speed is around 50mbit. My current router isn't powerful enough to process it and only works at around 2mbit a second. I will use the pfsense box with this in mind, please can you tell me if there is anything else useful for this box to do? Thank you.

I think the mighty Steve ( ;D ) will answer to this thread. So to save him from asking this: what else do you plan to do with the box? Snort, Squid, VLAN's, failover, other packages?
-
Honestly, I don't think much of anything else, maybe snort. I was just looking for it to be a VPN client, firewall.
-
It will be running on the ragged edge with packages, especially packages like snort. If you said only VPN, I'd say maybe.
-
VPN to where? And what's the purpose of linking the whole house? Are you sure that the link on the other side of the connection is capable of handling the speeds you have at your end of the link?
-
I want all my traffic to go through private internet access or airvpn (I think they are the best?), so if this isn't a powerful computer for that, what exactly would I be looking at for one for only vpn, snort, on a 50 mbit cable line? Thank you.

How fast is the vpn provider?
There are two ends to this connection. The provider and your pfsense.
Either could be the limiting side.
(I just checked airvpn - They are not going to max that box out in all likelihood. They are only promising 4 Mbit/s download + 4 Mbit/s )
-
So if i could find a provider that can do those speeds, would i have to decide on another build?
-
I'm not sure. I'm talking units of 50 MB/s now. Not sure if we are on the same page.
But yeah. I'd think 50 MB/s with VPN and snort would push that box pretty hard.
Lots of people have them I think. Maybe one of them will comment.
I have an old dual core running at 2.4 GHZ and When I do SFTP transfer from a gigabit connection to that 10 MB/s connection the pfsense is sitting on it pushes it pretty hard.
And VPN is all I run on that box.
-
I was talking about 50 megabits, not 50 megabytes. ><
-
I put an extra zero in by accident. Changing it now.
I think it will be close for you. Those things are not built for speed.
-
Hmm so if i had another box that i wanted to know about, can I list the specs here or start another topic? It's a A8 3800 Class APU…
-
That CPU is 9x or 10x faster. It will handle whatever you throw at it more than likely.

I have one more question!!! I have a Zotac Zbox nano id63, I have upgraded it to 4gb and a 60Gb SSD, will this do the job I want?

-
I think its plenty fast enough and the SSD is big enough.
I've no idea if it will install or not - May or may not be compatible.
You have one NIC on that machine right? Whats your plan to get WAN and LAN?
-
I was thinking about a Usb 3.0 Gigabit Ethernet adapter like this one,
http://www.amazon.com/Cable-Matters-SuperSpeed-Gigabit-Ethernet/dp/B00BBD7NFU/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1413750153&sr=8-1&keywords=usb+3.0+ethernet+adapter
-
My advice, no USB network interfaces…
(I await the howling masses to point out all the successful instances of USB NICs now)
It just seems to me that its usually more trouble than its worth.
-
Great, nothing else I can do to the Zotac? Btw, thanks for helping me!
-
There is a way… A single NIC will work fine if you use a VLAN capable switch.
You would need for it to be able to use Tagged VLAN as well as untagged.
Then you could get WAN/LAN over 1 NIC.
But really, please check compatibility before buying a machine.

Are you so sure you need snort?
