      2.1.5-RELEASE (amd64)
built on Mon Aug 25 07:44:45 EDT 2014
      FreeBSD 8.3-RELEASE-p16

      Intel(R) Celeron(R) CPU 440 @ 2.00GHz

I'm very new to this so I'm not even sure pfsense installed correctly.  When i was doing the original install off the usb, the console terminal became jumbled up.  When I log into the gui and try to change the interfaces I get the following message:

[ Unable to open /cf/conf/config.xml for writing in write_config()]

I checked there isnt a /cf/ directory.  There is a /config/ directory though that contains a config.xml file that looks like the one I want to change.  I tried creating a /cf directory but it says that's its only a "Read-only file system".

I've also tried to install pfsense on a hard drive but I get the following error:

      /etc/rc.initial: /scripts/lua_installer: not found

      Any tips for resolving this?

First of all if you have a graphics card in the system, hook up a screen and you can see how far the installation went.

2nd Did you try the i386 version also?
Celeron based systems may have boards not supporting 64 bits.

I did get it to finally reinstall but the issue I have is when you go through the options to do the formatting, the text is all jumbled up and very difficult to read.  I think I got it to install on the hard drive but it only created a hard drive that is 200 megs big instead of 250 gigs.  So I think I need to take another shot at installing it again.

Is there any way to keep the ascii text (i'm doing this through console) from messing up?

The celeron cpu supports 64 bit.

Not sure about the board though.  Its a CAR-2010 server if anybody knows.

That box appears to have VGA on board so you could just use a keyboard and monitor for the install if you have the appropriate header cable.

What console program are you using for the serial port? What cable are you using? How are you installing? What image(s) are you using?

I'll try the monitor/keyboard route when I get home tonight.

I'm using securecrt for the serial connection with the standard cisco cable to console in.

The image I am using is pfSense-memstick-serial-2.1.5-RELEASE-amd64-20140825-0744.img and putting it on an usb stick.

During installation I can see text displaying fine.  Its when I go to the part where it says to install it on the hard drive that I have issues.  It doesnt refresh the menus correctly so it just keeps layering text upon text.

Another thing that is somewhat irritating is the server is set up to console speed of 19200 (i havent found a place yet to change it) but the img sets the console to 9600.  So after POST i have to close the connection and open the lower one to see what is going on.

Ok, looks good. I've never tried securecrt. I always use putty and it's never given any trouble, give that a try.

You can set the serial console speed to whatever you want once pfSense is installed.

As an aside, take a look at kiTTY, a fork of puTTY.
