You cannot convert the .iso to a memstick.

The memstick .img files work fine when written properly: decompress, then write with win32 disk imager or similar, see https://doc.pfsense.org/index.php/Writing_Disk_Images

If your device has a picky BIOS it may not want to boot from certain memsticks, try another one also. The Soekris net6501 is notoriously picky about which sticks work.

When you get this error: Trying to mount root from ufs:/dev/ufs/
            Enter ? on the prompt
It will give  a list of devices
            e.g
            ad4 ad4s1a ad4s1b and so on
4 can be any number in your case. it might be 6 or it might be 8 or 2
once you have identified the correct device
            enter this: ufs:/dev/ad(yournumber)s1a
            and it will boot
remeber this is only temporary and you will have to modify your fstab to make it permanent
