No WAN connection problem

  • I've preconfigured my pfsense box so that when I get to the remote office where I will install it, it will be just plug and pray but apparently not. I preconfigured the WAN ip to use /29 ip address but when I got to the office, I was wrong, the ISP only gave us a single public ip 124.xx.xx.190 so assumed that it is a /30 range right? I also assumed that the gateway is 124.xx.xx189, I also tried 124.xx.xx.191 as gateway but to no avail,  I can't surf the net. Any idea what's wrong?

    TIA

  • I also tried the following setup to no avail:

    Zyxel Modem - 192.168.3.1
                            |
                            |
                  –------
                  |
                  |
              pfSense WAN 192.168.3.69
                  |
                  |
                  |
                pfSense LAN 192.168.4.1

I connected my pc to pfSense LAN via cross cable and pfSense WAN is connected to a Switch where the zyxel modem is connected. I still have the same issue that is I can't surf the net.

  • Even if you only get a single IP the subnet the provider runs at your wan might be a /24 with the getaeway being any ip inside that range. Without knowing some details about your WAN you won't get it running. Ask your ISP for that information as nobody here in the forum has an ip-/ subnetmirrorball  ;)

  • Hi I have a similar problem. I couldn't eben ping my wan . My setting wan 192.168.3.10 my gateway 192.168.3.2 ( Its an adsl modem with ) -  My lan 192.168.4.1.
    What should i set for my 192.168.3.10 / X what should x be ?
other people say 192.168.3.8 can't ping my 192.168.3.9

  • My damn ISP can't provide me information (inept tech support) and I've already made a trial and error of all the possible gateway and subnet mask configuration, rebooted the box time and time again to no avail. I can't surf the net, pfsense WAN ip can be pinged from WEBGUI but can't ping any outside host.

This is the setting from the modem:

    IP Address: 124.xxx.xx.190
    IP Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.255
    Default Gateway: MyISP
    VPI/VCI: 0/ 100

Modem is in routing mode and PPPoE as encapsulation.

I also tried using PPPoE with the username and password provided this time using a different approach to no avail, I still can't browse the net.

  • If the modem does the PPPoE your pfSense WAN might simply run as dhcp. Did you ever try that?

That works fine for me but then do I need to open rules on the WAN interface to get full connectivity …?
or a hint where to find standard config or rules example, doc or requirements?

as of now this works find but Windows update fails

  • Should work out of the box. Make sure you are using valid dns-servers (system>general). Maybe enter some DNS servers there manually (try the opendns.com servers for example). You only need firewallrules at WAN if you host some services that should be available to the public.

Yup you are right … removed all rules except
Log Pass * LAN Net * * * on LAN
Log Pass * DMZ Net * * * on DMZ

    Thanks ;o)

Unfortunately it did not either, actually when I reset to factory defaults, this is where pfSense hangs on startup, I had to take off the cables so could time out
