N00b help: simple integrated DHCP and DNS server
-
I'm a pfSense n00b and home user. I'm not an IT professional but I certainly act like one at home. I'm currently using Tomato firmware and I'm looking to upgrade. From my reading it seems like pfSense is a solid enhancement. I want to grow into pfSense starting with using it for DHCP and DNS integrated together. I tried installing it in a VM but it gets hung up on WAN detection. I started wondering if I'm approaching my needs the wrong way so rather than fighting the installation I thought I would post here for some discussion on how best to achieve my objectives. Maybe pfSense isn't the right choice for my needs, or maybe it is. If you're familiar with Tomato's Static DHCP and integration with its DNS Forwarder, you'll know what I'm looking to achieve in the near term.

You mean this?

What are you trying to accomplish? Pfsense would be meant to replace your soho router, yes it can be run in vm. I run mine on a esxi host and works great for my whole network.
You could then leverage your current wifi router as just an AP for your network.
