I am using the Cyber Monday bargains to build a PfSense, Snort Box.  This will be only my second PFSense machine and my first HW build.  All this for < $250.

    BLKD2500CCE Intel Desktop Board
    Crucial 4GB Single DDR3 1600 MT/s (PC3-12800) CL11 SODIMM 204-Pin 1.35V/1.5V Notebook Memory Module CT51264BF160B
WD Green 1 TB Desktop Hard Drive
Sentey® Mini ITX Ss5-2514 Computer Case

I realize the 2500 is old tech but there are no newer board w dual Intel NICs under $150 (that I could find).  Should be fairly quiet and low power.

  • I have this board and 4 GB of RAM.
It does a fantastic job with snort, dual gigabit intel NIC does its job quite well too…
I get 650-700 Mbit/s between NICs which is awsome for board like this...

I also installed second dual gigabit intel NIC so now I have 4 in total... I have 6 VLANs, snort and openvpn, this board deals with all this without a problem... I recommend it.

  • I also have this board in my home router.  Running completely fanless for over a year in this configuration:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=saL5b7d7mjI

I like this board a lot.  It has no problems running DHCP and OpenVPN for me.  I still think it's the best choice for a mini itx board for pfSense.
