Strange issue when placing pfsense on network
-
Hi,
Can anyone explain why this happens? We have a ubuntu server running squid proxy, and when I plug the pfsense server into network - this squid proxy will stop working. If I unplug the pfsense box, it works. They are both setup on the same lan, but different wans.
Thanks,

You say the boxes are on the same LAN but different WANs? Does that mean your squid box is sitting on the perimeter? Is it firewalled? If so, what route is it taking out? By saying 'squid stops working', have you checked the logs on both systems (pfSense and Squid)? Does the squid service error at all? Is your client set to use the proxy via a Proxy PAC file or is it set statically within the browser settings? And what route is the client taking to get out?
You'll need to supply a bit more information before anyone can give an answer. Might be helpful if you gave the internal addresses for both your squid and pfsense systems for a start, along with routing information and the internal address/routing of your client as well.

sorry was in a rush when posting, the clients are set to use the squid box as a proxy server. the squid box is firewalled etc. when I say stop working, the clients with the proxy server set will no longer be able to browse the internet when pfsense is plugged in, if I unplug it works (on different ip addresses as well)

What does your pfSense box do on the network? Is it also a Squid proxy?

So pfsense and squid on the same lan – lets call them pf 192.168.1.1 and squid 192.168.1.2
How would pf have anything to do with other lan members say 192.168.1.3 talking to 192.168.1.2?? Unless there was a duplicate IP, or dhcp server change? What is your dhcp server on this lan? Are clients static? How are they pointed this proxy? Autodiscovery/wpad/implicit? What are the clients gateway - what is the gateway off this network? Pfsense?
Really need some more info to guess to that the issue could be.
