Index Files & .htaccess

Hello,
I have a hosted website.
I need to keep the links short:
-
On printed business cards, where people enter the link, by hand, despite my providing a QR code. (Think FONT & TYPO'S…); and,

On really small screens/screen areas. For example, my Android phone's "Contact Owner" screen AREA is TINY. That is where I put a link to a contact form, in case I lose the device. (AGAIN, FONT & TYPO'S!!!)
On my hosted site, links that only specify the directory, not a specific file, the server only searches for 3 "index" file types:
"index.html", "index.htm", or "index.php"
However, I'm fairly certain I need to have SHTML/SHTM/(PHTML :-P ) files, since I'm going for Server Side Includes/Server Side Scripting. NOT Client Side Scripting, Client Side Javascript, for example.
Is it possible to write my .htaccess file, in each directory, or in the parent, to rewrite/redirect the server's interpretation of the link, calling for "index.html, index.htm or index.php" to "index.shtml", or "????.shtml"?
If you know this to be true, can you suggest the syntax?
I HAVE done some googling, but it seems that the Apache syntax is unforgiving.
