Swap ethernet cards

If I have things running right now and need to swap out the ethernet cards in the box, what is the proper way to do it to cause the least amount of problems ?
Any steps that I should do in a specific order ? -
Make sure you have console access, then swap the cards out. You will get an interface mismatch on bootup and have the opportunity to re-assign your LAN, WAN, and OPT ports.
