Adobe Flash Player is the new Java
-
Meanwhile my Linux Mint machine sits headless 8500 miles away, rarely updated manually and rarely rebooted awaiting my commands… Just saying.
I don't think anyone NEEDS flash so mush as its being forced on us.
Java - I do have a server that runs on java... The open source version. I don't update that manually either.
I'm not sure how they are managing it but Linux mint seems to rarely need a reboot even after major updates.
Its just rock solid for me and hassle free.
-
I have that with server 2003 and 2008….
If you dont run all sorts of shit on it and just focus on the core functions then its hasslefree and boots a lot quicker than pfSense/Freebsd.

2 years ago I installed linux as a dual boot for my sister who is a die hard windows fan and knows ZERO about anything else. (Which, BTW is the only reason windows thrives)
I installed it just incase she crashed windows, which she did…2 years later, (last week) she texts me "My god linux is fast".
Deep inside every non-gamer windows fan is a linux fan just waiting to get out...

Good point about added software. I forgot how they try and piggyback some McAfee product with the download(Also by default). And don't get me started about the stub installer. What a POS. And to make the full installer so hard to find, geez.
-
I love how every new piece of malware, every new hack, every new major software or internet vulnerability is normally follow up with the phrase "only affects windows systems".
Usually, this is the case.
-
Did you see the ShellShock news??? :D
-
Nope - Whats the new shellshock news?
-
-
That reminds me of getting emails with "Britney_Naked.jpeg.exe". Omg! Click it!
-
You mean I wasn't supposed to open that?

@Phishfry:
The more i deal with Flash the less i like it. On my current WindowsXP daily box I have Flash Player-Mozilla set to alert but not download automatically. I set all my Flash Player settings to None in the control panel for cookies or sharing or camera and yet even after a manual upgrade it nukes the settings and resumes its snooping. This is not an accident but by design. I really have reached a point where it is becoming quite unappealing to a point to where i may shun it. Many of my computer clients bellyached after i ripped Java off there machine too…I can't play my games anymore!!BAHH

Wait.
You complain about Java yet use XP? What?
-
Well - At least you aren't being nagged with windows xp updates anymore…. So, thats good right? haha

What about this interesting business parallel:
Takata Airbags are being forced to recall "faulty"airbags from year 2000 model automobiles.
While Microsoft can unilaterally declare Windows XP -end of life-.
My Windows box didn't have an expiration date on it when i bought it. But King Bill declares it and poof.
Bet Takata wish they could declare their old products EOL.
Just how ling should we expect an airback packed with explosives to last as intended?

I know where your going with this but it's a bad comparison.. Automakers have to adhere to safety regulations while MS produces software. Compare to other software companies, MS at least supported XP for a very very long time (13 years or so). I'm glad to see it go, long live Windows 7, lol…
-
By "long" I assume you mean January 14, 2020 ?
-
something like that… Its funny, I work for a pretty big corporation and we were still using Windows XP for desktop computer up till about a month before the deadline...
3 factors pushed for the change:
1: being the end of MS support/updates which leads into
2: PCI
3: We had to update our softphone client and the new version didn't run on XPNumber 3 was the main reason tho =D
I still see ATMs running XP
I try to skip ever other version of Windows

I have little use for windows other to to placate people who use it because "its the standard", which is a condition microsoft works hard to perpetuate.
Just switch my oldest soon to Linux mint and he is happy as can be.

I do find your post ironic.
You dont like people that use Windows because it is the standard.
Yet you FORCE your son to Linux.I dont know; Maybe you should let him make his own choice.
There are plenty of free legal ways to get Windows.

free legal ways? there are none. (re-using OEM stickers isn't legal.)
Windows is a commercial product and hasn't been for free EVER.
this might change in the future with the rumors of a windows 365. -

Well - I said we switched him - I didn't say against his will.
He made the choice on his own when his windows machine became infected despite the AV running on it.My younger son is also asking to have his switched to linux mint also.
They like the boot time and the responsiveness.
I don't generally have to force them to do anything.
