I have little use for windows other to to placate people who use it because "its the standard", which is a condition microsoft works hard to perpetuate.
Just switch my oldest soon to Linux mint and he is happy as can be.

You dont like people that use Windows because it is the standard.
Yet you FORCE your son to Linux.I dont know; Maybe you should let him make his own choice.
There are plenty of free legal ways to get Windows.

free legal ways? there are none. (re-using OEM stickers isn't legal.)
Windows is a commercial product and hasn't been for free EVER.
this might change in the future with the rumors of a windows 365. -

Well - I said we switched him - I didn't say against his will.
He made the choice on his own when his windows machine became infected despite the AV running on it.My younger son is also asking to have his switched to linux mint also.
They like the boot time and the responsiveness.
I don't generally have to force them to do anything.

I have no problem with others using Windows, just one simple rule: Do not ask me for help with it.
I'm not so happy using Windows myself, keep hitting bugs that drive me insane. Just hit a glitch where Win 7 wouldn't create a system restore DVD set. Kept failing with error messages that led to error messages that led to technet articles not related to my issue. Wasted hours before I kicked myself for trying to fix an MS issue on MS sites and Googled up the answer in less than ten minutes. Who'd of thought that not having the C: partition active flag set would cause the Windows system image creation program to die horribly?
Grandkids are happy with their used laptops now loaded with OpenSuse and the Education add-ons. Kids are happy the grandkids have indestructible software to play with and grandpa deals with updates to new releases every year or so.
Mom, now 90, wanted Windows removed from her computer after her last virus issue passed on from another family member. She is also on OpenSuse and happy using the Chrome browser for most everything she does. Only complaint I get is that she thinks one of the card games is cheating.
Wife is happy on Linux for the most part, uses a Chromebook for browsing from her comfy chair as she finds her Dell laptop too heavy, hot and short of battery life.

I'm convinced that 99.9% of all non-gamer adults would be happier on Linux.
Most adults need a bullet proof, reliable OS and a good web browser.
I look at windows as a gaming platform, not a productivity platform.

I like both linux and windows… I tend to use windows 90% because I'm lazy and it works for what I need. At work I'm mostly rdp in windows servers or putty. There a few tools that I have to use that are only for windows... Funny tho, its basically a terminal emulator but has a bunch of export/import functions that are built in and its only for windows :-(We had a bunch of execs that have mac but still have to use parallels or a windows vdi to work...
Everyone complains about viruses with windows... if linux was mainstream, I bet it would have more viruses then windows.

Of course people at work have to run windows. Its because everyone is so invested in windows already, not because if the world had it to do over again today windows would be 1st choice. As far as windows popularity being the reason why viruses work so well on them, its not. Its because windows defaults to allow any file to be executed and by default allows said files complete system access. You CAN get a moderate level of security on windows machines, but thats far from default configuration.
Anyway - These sorts of conversations never go anywhere.
My die-hard windows loving partners are begrudgingly slowly replacing as much windows services with linux as possible because every time we have a big issue it tracks backs to the windows they love so much.

Kind back to the root of my thread. Adobe and the crapyware "games" now pre-installed.
It wasn't that java was bad it was unpatched Java 6SE that was a leaking POS. I think that the – Antivirus 2012 to Antivirus 2014-- Virus's pretty much killed my appetite for Java. I had to do so much work de-funking machines from it that i came to hate it and immediately uninstalled it -whether needed or not. Super nasty bugs.
Funny how Embedded XP lives on at Bank of America ATM's....
I work with embedded XP for shipboard systems and they are not upgrading until the equipment dies. I don't blame them. Mostly off grid engine management systems. Dredges as well..

Yes - Windows is fine not networked. Still, even in that situation, and maybe especially for industrial control situations, linux/bsd - way better.
If we could get microsoft out of the USA's infrastructure, China would be reduced to ineffective brute force attacks, honey traps to steal passwords and physically breaking in to buildings to install malware (after they compiled it on the machine in question… assuming they have the password).
Not like today where you are screwed just by opening an email or receiving a file on skype or loading an infected thumbdrive....
I even like java better on linux - It just updates with everything else without specifically nagging you JUST FOR JAVA.

I did make the switchover to HTML5 as you recommended and it works fine. Youtube laptop disassembly videos is all i really needed anyway…I like Seamonkey with flashblock, which also supports html5 blocking and whitelists.

Thinking back, I had to buy an winsock2 software just to get wfw 3.11 to connect to the internets..
