VM for pfsense 2.2 and own cloud on one machine - info?!?
-
a friend asked me to setup a pfsense box for them, but they also need a owncloud setup on the same machine.
basically this machine will be their router and run their vpns, etc, but also allow clients to login and upload files, etc
was going to use esxi as the hypervisor.
going to build them a low power quad core based system with 16gb of ram. give 3 cores and 12gb to pfsense and 1 core and 4gb to the cloud.
I am going to use pfsense 2.2, but I am not sure about what to use for the owncloud vm? nas4free? ubuntu?, ideas?
also, how would i ensure that both systems speak to each other? is there a guide?

First of all you need to read up on ESXi and how it works. There might be some good videos on YouTube, but this forum is not the best place to start. To give you a quick answer though: ESXi has virtual switches and you configure witch VMs connect to which switches. If you connect two VMs to the same switch they can communicate with each other, just like with physical switch.
As far as ownCloud goes I would look for an existing VM image if possible, if not check on their forum what people are running.

There are OwnCloud VM appliances at turnkeylinux, bitnami and susestudio. Maybe more but they are the ones I looked at.
I chose the TurnkeyLinux one but it is quite out of date - Version 5.12, I think. Had to manually limit it to TLS (i.e., no SSL) and to allow large file sizes. Certainly minimal command line stuff to get it up and running though. No luck upgrading it to 7.x but you may have the skills required - check the Turnkey Forums.

I was just looking for something on the net and found this guide that explains how to setup ESXi + pfSense:
https://calvin.me/part-1-install-pfsense-on-esxi-5-5/
It seems to be a pretty nice guide using recent versions of ESXi and pfSense.

"give 3 cores and 12gb to pfsense and 1 core and 4gb to the cloud."
You have that switched I think.. What is the speed of the connection?? How many vpn connections? Pfsense sure and the hell does not need 3 cores and 12GG of ram ;)
