Traffic Shaping - Dual Lan

  • Firstly I'm trying to work out if this is even possible and then how to do it.

At the moment I'm sharing my internet connection with house mates, we have 2 independent networks

    (House Mates)
    Modem - Router -|
                            |- Second Router - (My Network)

By doing this i can run my network independently (and I need to) from them.
There are two problems I'm trying to fix by using pfSense.

    1. double router port forwarding
    2. equally sharing the internet connection

What I'm trying to setup is a pfSense with two LAN interfaces, one for house mates, and the other for my network.

    LAN1- (House Mates)
    Modem -WAN- pfSense-|
                                    |-LAN2- (My Network)

And then with that I also want to equally share the internet so that when the house mates are downloading torrents I don't get timed out when ever I try and use the internet.
I don't want to split the connection 50/50 and limit it to that as when either they or I aren't home id like them or I to have full use of the internet speeds.

I was reading on setting up Pipes in the old 1.0.1 version (don't know if they still used with 1.2) for setting up with priorities between applications and seems like what I'm trying to do in a round about sort of way.

Any ideas or help on segregating my network nicely and equally would be great.

  • in 1.2 you can only shape between 2 interfaces. so you can have yoour housemate and your self on the LAN and just shape on the ip addresses.

  • 2 interfaces shaping will come in pfSense 1.3. You might want to have a look at this announcement: http://blog.pfsense.org/?p=174
