I have been on Manual Outbound NAT (AON) for a ling time now.  I upgraded from pfSense 2.1 to 2.2 , and now tried to change Outbound NAT to Automatic Outbound NAT.  When I do this I see two things happening:

      All HTTPS requests fail
No rules appear in the Automatic rules table - the table is empty.

How to I switch to automatic outbound NAT and have the system auto generate these rules and be functional?

For automatic outbound NAT to function you need to make sure that:

        1. WAN interfaces have gateways selected on, for example, Interfaces > WAN
        2. LAN interfaces DO NOT have gateways selected on, for example, Interfaces > LAN

If the table is empty, then either no interfaces have gateways selected, or all interfaces have gateways selected.

You are 100% correct.  The WAN interface did not have a default gateway selected in the WAN interface page.  The default GW was there though in the routes table, so I just selected it in the WAN interface page and now automatic outbound NAT properly creates the auto rules.  Thank you for your help.
