I've been doing a few pfSense installs lately and one thing that has been really annoying is the handling of the WAN interface.

During installation, the WAN interface MUST be defined.  Even the LAN interface is optional, but it insists on a WAN interface before I can configure anything else.  Generally, I would rather set up a management interface first, and worry about setting up WAN interfaces later.

After installation, the WAN interface can't be deleted using the web frontend.  It can be reassigned, reconfigured, and disabled, but as far as I can tell, it can't be deleted.

This seems like a strange and arbitrary limitation.  Am I missing something here?  Is there any way to remove it and/or not have to set it up when installing?

(I read this: https://forum.pfsense.org/index.php?topic=30839.0 but I don't want to disable NAT)
