I am hoping to get some help with a current i3 build I want to partake in. I have searched and searched but I cannot find much information on an i3 build.

This will be for home use. I will be using many of the packages and the VPN endpoint. My current connection is horrible 12/1, but I will be moving back to the states soon and will be taking advantage of Google fiber, so I want to be able to take advantage of full gigabit bandwidth. I also only want Intel LAN chips.

This is what I have so far, but I am up for suggestions. I would like to stay as low-powered as I can, but I don't mind if it is a small overkill.

      CPU: Intel i3-4330 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819116945&cm_re=Intel_i3--19-116-945--Product

      MB: ASUS H971-Plus http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813132123

      RAM: Corsair 8GB 240-Pin DDR3 1600 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820233144

NIC: the MOBO has 1 onboard LAN with Intel chip, but I want to get a PCI-Express with dual Intel LANs. Is there a true difference in speed between the PCI-E 4x to 16x? Any recommendation on a good NIC? this is what I was looking at: http://www.amazon.com/Intel-1000-Dual-Server-Adapter/dp/B000BMXME8/ref=sr_1_6?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1424701996&sr=1-6&keywords=Intel+PRO%2F1000+Pt+Dual+Port+Server+Adapter

HD: I am going to grab a crucial or Samsung SSD. No preference.

For the case and the power supply, I am at a loss. First, I am having a hard time finding the power consumption of the MB and all of the parts combined. For the case, I would prefer something smaller, but it does not have to be tiny. I also wouldn't mind a 1u or 2u rack case.
Any good recommendations for a power supply and case? And would a 200W PSU be sufficient, or is that too much?

With all of the experts on here I would greatly appreciate some guidance. : - )

      Thanks for your time.

      Adam

I agreed with previous poster, (unless you already have the i3 in another machine that you are repurposing).

That super micro is pretty sharp for the application.

I also like this one in case you want to save some $$…but I don't think that the case

          Supermicro Mini ITX A1SRI-2558F-O

If you wanted to look nice, you can match it with their case too (CSE-504-203B)

Lucky you with that Google Fiber, they are suppose to be here in Atlanta very soon =)

The one I build recently, I put it on this case with a 200W supply

          iStarUSA D-118V2-ITX-20FX2 1U with 200W supply

            @ u/messerchmidt

I was actually look at the Atoms. You say that it is faster than the i3? How so, all of the benchmarks I looked at show the i3 being fast….do the 8 cores help with pfSense? Also, would the Atom be able to handle pfSense with all of the packages? I plan on running everything I possibly can to experiment, and I do not want to be restricted by hardware. I do like the idea of that many Intel Nics though... :P

I was actually look at those exact case, that is, if I go with a rack mount. I was looking at this new case from Silver Stone that just hit the market, should be on Amazon/Newegg within two weeks.

Either option looks great, but I would probably go with the mesh front panel for the dust filters.

What VPN throughput do you need?

In single thread applications, the atom is not faster. when all the cores are used, it is. It also uses far less power than the i3.

the older generation of atoms may have been underpowered, this one isn not. it is 1/2 the speed of a xeon 1230v3 while using 1/2 the power.

it supports ecc ram (which i would buy in your place for it), while the i3 need a different board for that. it has a quad port lan.

the c2758 also has intel quick assist, which will be very useful when pfsense adds support for it in short order. (the c2750 does not, neither does the i3)

this can do everything the i3 can, but more, including more vms.

but the i3 and the atom are overkill for you, but the atom is a better use of money for overkill.

also, supermicro makes server grade parts. something that is a good thing as they tend to fail less, etc

atom from SM also has impi so you can remote control it via a ethernet cable

As already stated, the Atom is very low power witch add up when you have your firewall up 24/7, should not hit any performance wall anytime soon.

I like the silverstone, if you like those type check out CHENBRO SR30169T2-250 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811123173)

I personally went with 1U, since i have a 2U NAS Plus 1U UPS so all 3 look great an clean on a small 6U Rack Cabinet.
