So what's the deal with the "USB console" in the upcoming boards?

Is it a built-in USB/RS232 converter or what?

So I have to have driver support to talk to the console?

I'm not talking about installing via USB stick.  I'm talking about USB console port vs Serial console port.

It appears to be just a USB to serial converter integrated into the unit (just like with some of the newer Cisco ISRs & APC UPS units).

You shouldn't need to install any drivers with the more modern OSes (Win 7 & later). It should be using the USB HID type so the drivers are already integrated into the OS (when it supports at least USB 2.0).

            Yes, it's an on-board usb-serial adapter.
I believe, though I haven't used one personally, that it's an ftdi chip so it should work without drivers with almost any OS.

You'll need a null modem mini USB cable  ;)
