PLEASE all join me in telling me HOW GREAT I AM, and say thanks to me!

Yes, my dear IT-peoples, this is what a "stupid economist" like me brings to the table: it's called Sales, a part of Marketing, meaning: how do I get your attention?
This is not about me, this is a thread to thank all the GREAT people who've made this product and community which we so much enjoy. They need praise.
-
The pfSense team: the people who started this project, from time to time didn't have much to eat but still persisted since they had a dream: praise the Lords(!)
-
The package developers who gave us the extended functionality which makes pfSense such a marvelous system which extends the core router and firewall into a horribly usable ( ;D ) system: praise the Lords(!)
-
The documentation writers that spend their time explaining how to actually use this complicated system: praise the Lords(!)
-
The forum members, not of the above category, who so generously, day after day, spend their time helping people understand more and fix their problems: praise the Lords(!)
I don't recall all of the people who've helped me in the past (I have some brain problems due to an accident), so from current memory, I'd like to mention a few people personally, whom I consider "Hall of Fame" people, chronologically:
-
Stephen: who is the most sincere British gentleman I've met too date (and yes, I even worked in London ;D ), and who helped me in my first steps on pfSense, when nothing ever worked.
-
Bill, Bmeeks: who spends so much time to help us all protecting ourselves with Snort and Suricata, and who is like a Rottweiler (my beloved dogs ;D )so fast when it comes to responding to Snort/Suricata threads. You hardly can't find a thread detailing a problem with Snort/Suricata, or you will see Bill's response being the first response, and a fast response too.
-
Phil.Davis: a man who patiently answers the same questions time after time again. He answerred many of my noob questions. Patiently.
-
BBCan & JFL: they're almost at the same time, from my memory, so I'll put them on the same line. BB has done an amazing job creating pfBlockerNG (and before that the script that turned into pfBlockerNG, a really hugely admirable package(!)), and along came JFL, who has a gift for writing things in both an understandable (number 1 rule for scientic publications) as well as humorous way. JFL took on him the effort of glueing things together, creating the bigger perspective: "so how does it all hang together, the firewall, Snort/Suricata, pfBlockerNG: what do you need to do where to make it work?". And, again, and I praised him for it before: in normal citizens language, so non-IT people can understand it too –- and with a lot of humor in it. A remarkable talent in the area of IT-explanation and documentation. Says me, the economist, per definition in his target group.
I am most sure I forgot people, please forgive me ( :-[ ), my memory has been destroyed ever since my severe accident. If I didn't mention you, it does not mean I didn't value you, it simply means I can't recall it (stupid brain; I wish all my enemies my accident).
I hope all members in this fine community join in in this thread to praise their heroes. Put in your own. After all, all these categories of people mentioned are heroes. They-don't-have-to-give-this-to-us. They could as well lie on the couch and watch "Oprah". But they choose not to: they choose to give to us - for free. And that makes them heroes.
I could also urge to give something back to these great people. Donate. To them. I did to all of them. Except for one man: who refuses to let me buy him a coffee. This is still my frustration (you know who you are 8) ): I'm an honorable man, if somebody helps me I want to say thanks. Not by words, but by giving a present ("put your money where your mouth is", words of wisdom from GrandPa).
A small donation via Paypal, and please do take your coffee/beer (take the Belgium beers, they're the Master Brewers in the world, nobody can come close to them ;) ) on my behalf. I would have paid your beer if we had met in person and you've helped me solved the problem I was frustrating on for days, so I can also pay your beer from a distance: the effect is the same).
So, I could propose to you: mention your heroes here and give praise to them. And, in addition, take say 25 dollars, and divide that over your, for example, 5 most loved heroes. Each gets 5 dollars. Yet, if only 100 people think like this, each hero gets a nice present in return for all this love he/she gave to us. Can be spent on beer, flowers for the Wife, a toy for the kids, a bone for the dog, or whatever.
It's the many great heroes in here we should honor. And: put the money where the mouth is; give them a present too :-*
After all, without them, we wouldn't be anywhere.
Stupid economist out ( ;D )
Bye,

I would like to thank ermal for sharing his comprehensive understanding of how pf/pfSense functions, at a low level.
I would like to thank gonzopancho for being direct and sincere, sometimes too much so. ;)

Ok, so only Nullity and me appreciate what the community gives to us so generously 8)

I prefer to show my support for this project and help it succeed by assisting people in the forums on my time for free. The ESF guys certainly don't need their butts kissed, especially when they are getting paid to do this. I generally don't feel like ostentatious praise is necessary, and in a community-driven project it can have a negative effect. Many people here give up their time to help the project. Someone will have their nose out of joint if others are recognized and that person isn't.
Besides, isn't that what the +1 and Thank You buttons are for? I use those freely when someone deserves them.
