New Build Help

Hello. I'm new to pfSense but am excited to learn and build my own box. I've been reading everywhere possible and would like some opinions.

My usage:
-home router
-firewall
-OpenVPN
-couple of packages but nothing overly sophisticated

I have a FreeNas server I'd like to access from the outside. Multiple Windows and Apple machines.

I've looked at the following:
Intel Atom D2550 all in one, see below

-building my own using the Intel Atom D2500CCE and other parts from Amazon

-I've also looked at other setups using J1900, and other Celeron processor.

My fear with most of the above are the reviews. Some are Ok but not powerful enough; get too hot, don't work because of various ACPI issues, etc…

I would like to build something that is powerful enough but not very expensive that I can just buy the one at the sense store.

I'd could use some help on mobo that work and processors.

Again, I know you don't have to spend a lot of money to get a quality router for home but I need some help.

Have you considered a used notebook?

Spending nearly $123 for a NewEgg device? Why not $199 for an Alix APU?

Three GB LAN ports
Three miniPCIe slots
4 GB RAM
SD Card slot to start and perhaps a mSATA later

Install pfSense on a used Notebook with built-in NIC.
Configure WAN interface as VLAN 99
Configure LAN interface as native.

Connect to smart switch port configured as PVID 1 (typical default), member of VLAN 99, Tagged
Connect ISP to smart switch port configured as PVID 99, member VLAN 99, Un-Tagged

I thought about using one of these but the only meet the minimum requirements and are eol this year. Plus I read they can't do some of the packages, etc.

Also the APU systems are on back order till end of June. Patience or try to building something for about same price and maybe a little more power. Idk

Im leaning towards a Supermicro X10SLV-Q w/ an Intel i3-4130.

I do like the Quad Core of the embedded AMD of the Supermicro H9SKV-420 .

What do you guys think?
