      I have 2.2.2 running and I'm not able to get sync'd up with any outside NTP servers.  I've tried a bunch of them and I've given them multiple hours to sync up before giving up on them. 2 sets over night even.  I'm able to syncup with other internal servers just fine, just not outside servers. I've looked through the other similar posts and have not had any luck trying the same things they have. e.g. disabling the Kiss'o'death setting or unselecting the interfaces it should support on the ntp config page. Clients behind the firewall are able to sync up with outside NTP servers just fine so i don't think it's a misconfigured rule. Any suggestions?

        Well, "out of the box", it works.
        My Status=>NTP page:

        Network Time Protocol Status ▾
        Status Server Ref ID Stratum Type When Poll Reach Delay Offset Jitter
        Active Peer 	37.59.25.31 	145.238.203.14 	2 	u 	46 	256 	377 	34.690 	0.954 	3.526

        so …. your setup broke something.

          Sorry - i just realized on my drive in to work what the problem is. The router's default egress path is going through a vpn and that is what is causing the problem.  NTP is working :)
