Priority on WWW traffic

  • Hello,

How is possible during file downloading prioritize the www and mail traffic ?

Can be assign a maximum of 80% of the bandwith for download and leave always free 20% for www and mail traffic ?

    Thanks for help

    Fabrizio

  • That depends on the type od download traffic. If you for example are downloading via http the traffic will be from the same type like webbrowsing. The trafficshaper then can't distinguish which traffic is which. However, when speaking of bittorrent for example things are different. Just run the shaperwizard and use the p2p catch all rule. Set the mail traffic and the http traffic to higher priority. dns is recommended to have high priority as well. That should give you a good starting point.

  • Ok, thanks but is it possible define a maximum bandwith that an user can utilize ?

I mean in case I have a 2MB of bandwith on my Wan link I would like that an user can utilize a miximum of 1MB, is it possible ?

    Thanks

  • Yes, you can specify upper limits for queues. It will be hard though to set this up per user unless you use the penalty option (one of the screens when running the traffic shaper wizard). If you want to limit multiple users/IPs this way you can first create an alias and then reference it on that screen.

This may be done by squid more simple: define a one connection speed less than maximum available for this acl. In this case is possible to make difference between http traffic types
